Also called "The Marseilles Trilogy," writer Marcel Pagnol's moving films followed the lives of several residents of the French seacoast city. In "Marius" (1931), directed by Alexander Korda, Fanny, daughter of a fishmonger, falls for cafe owner Cesar's son Marius, who yearns to be a sailor. Marius sets out to sea in Marc Allegret's "Fanny" (1932), unaware that Fanny is pregnant with his child. Learning upon his return that Fanny has wed older merchant Panisse, Marius is sent away by Cesar. Pagnol himself helmed the final chapter, "Cesar" (1936), in which Marius and Fanny's grown son Cesariot searches for his true father. Orane Demazis, Pierre Fresnay and Jules Raimu star.
